Carpet materials

Carpet is not only available in many different colors, textures, and patterns, it’s also available in plenty of materials:

  • Wool
  • Nylon
  • Olefin
  • Polyster
  • Acrylic

Wool is the luxury carpet option – it’s very nice, but it comes with a steep price tag. Nylon is just as durable as wool and it’s much less expensive. Nylon is also highly stain-resistant. Olefin is an ideal choice for many indoor and outdoor locations because it’s durable and highly resistant to water and stains. Polyester is less durable than nylon, but it’s much cheaper. It has a wonderfully thick pile. Acrylic isn’t usually used as wall-to-wall carpeting because it tends to fuzz. It feels and looks like wool, plus it resists moisture and mildew, so many people use it for bathroom rugs.

Pros of carpet

Carpet requires regular vacuuming, which isn’t a big deal for most people. Most modern carpet features stain-resistant treatment so liquids can’t penetrate the surface. Spills will sop up easily as long as you take care of them immediately. Stain guards are effective, but they won’t keep spills from penetrating your carpet forever.

Carpet is often considered an eco-friendly choice because it provides insulation in winter and summer. Temperature changes are prevented from seeping through the floor, keeping your utility bills lower and saving energy 24/7.

Carpet is also a natural sound-proofer, making it an ideal choice for bedrooms.

Cons of carpet

There are some important disadvantages of carpet to take into consideration. For example, the thicker the material and the denser the weave in a carpet, the more problems will develop over time. Moisture absorption, staining, and mildew are all common issues with carpet over time. If your home has a pipe leak or flooding and excess water gets on your carpet, you’ll have to throw it out before mold and mildew can develop and make you sick.

Plus if you or anyone in your family suffers from allergies, carpet may not be right for your home because carpet can aggravate your symptoms.

If you have a cat or dog who sometimes relieves themselves in your home, carpet isn’t recommended. If a cat or dog urinates or defecates on your carpet, the smell and staining can be difficult to remove effectively. If it happens frequently, the smell will become impossible to eradicate, and you’ll have to replace it.
